Letters to His children...Who is God?

You have to understand something about me up front, so you can understand better why I write the way that I do.

I love Jesus. Desperately so. And I want my kids to love Him too. Not because they are forced, but because they see His tremendous goodness and mercy and love and they long for Him like I do.

Because I love Jesus, I recognize that our kids aren't really ours. They are His. What does that mean? It means He blessed us with Homerun Kid, Wonder Woman and Super/Spiderman...and they are on loan to us. We have the tremendous privilege of raising them, training them, teaching them and most importantly, loving them.

So, to that end, for some time I have wanted to write...letters to them...lessons that I wish I understood more fully as a child and a teenager. Why? Because I think if I truly understood these things, I would have made different choices along the way. You see, every day we make choices. I make choices. And every choice has a consequence. Not all consequences are bad. And I wish, oh, how I wish...that I understood some fundamental truths about who God is and who He created me to be long before I was a mommy.

Perhaps if someone had told me these things I wouldn't have understood it anyway, and my choices would have been the same. Maybe. That doesn't mean I shouldn't share this with my kids anyway...and so...the first of a series of letters to His children...on loan to me.

Who is God? Dear child, God is your creator. He is your heavenly father. The way He intended for things to work is that your earthly father would be a reflection of God – your heavenly father. Because of the sin in this world, and the heartache that sin causes, our earthly parents do not always make a good representation of who God is. But I assure you, God is good. Your earthly daddy and mommy (that would be ME and your daddy) are sinful, flawed humans. We desperately needed a Savior, and God sent His Son Jesus to die for us so that we would have the gift of eternal life. We aren't perfect. We make lots of mistakes. Still, we love you, and we try very hard to daily be more like Christ.

God is the creator of all things. “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” Genesis 1:1. He spent six days working very hard to create the light and the dark, the land and the sea, the birds of the air and every living thing. He created man and breathed life into him. And when man was lonely, he made a helper suitable for him.

Who is God? You often ask me. God is love. God is goodness. God is just and fair and righteous. God is the beginning and the end. God is the only filler for the hole you will one day recognize on the inside of you. (We all have that hole. It’s a deep longing for something more. And only God, the lover of your soul, can fill it.)

Who is God? Sometimes the question stumps me. Not because I don’t know the answer, but because it’s hard to put into words the most awesome and incredible and magnificent creator of all things. He is all that and so much more.

Who is God? God is the one being in the entire universe who can be trusted. He will never fail you, never leave you, never forsake you. “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you.” Deuteronomy 31:6.

Things in this world, in your life, may happen that are hurtful. And I pray that that isn’t the case. I pray that I might be saying something that isn’t true, because as your mom, I don’t want you to know pain; however, if the things of this world break your heart, just know that God is with you. Always. He hasn’t left you, and He walks through every fire with you because He loves you.

Who is God? Ask Him to show you…dear one…and I promise you, He will.
