It's a yeast vat from the early 1900s. There's a date stamp inside, but it's heavy so I can't check it easily.
It was used to store baking dough while it was rising. Then the tops were used for kneading and preparing the dough for baking.
And it's heavy. As in, it has those sliders underneath it, and they are permanently there...cause I can't lift it to get them out.
Wow, that is a very interesting statement piece! If it were in my house, I'd probably balance out the dark wood of the vat with some brightly colored trinkets (vases, etc.) or fresh flowers on top.
